In a campus-wide e-mail sent Thursday afternoon, University Police Chief Jack Pearson said the university has taken steps to increase security in response to four reported assaults on campus during the past few weeks.
According to the e-mail, the night patrols have been doubled and the escort service has extended its hours. The e-mail also said the university has retained a private security firm that will patrol the on-campus residence halls.
Pearson said the Long Beach Police Department plans to work alongside the University Police in its investigations and “will take on a higher visibility on and near the campus.”
A series of town hall-style meetings will be planned for the Cal State Long Beach community and will include security information and precautionary measures.
The e-mail concluded with the descriptions of the past four assaults that occurred on campus, starting with the assault that happened on Oct. 21.
“I would like to ask each of you to help us avoid additional attacks,” Pearson wrote in the e-mail. “We need everyone’s help.”
Pearson advised students to never to walk alone on campus and to use the Code Blue telephones located throughout the campus.
“Be a friend, walk with a friend. If you work out on the track, run with your friends,” Pearson wrote. “Let’s work together for our own safety and to put an end to this kind of criminal activity.”
