Hollywood composer alumnus comes back to The Beach

Students read through Bruce Broughton's film scores.

Hollywood film composer Bruce Broughton conducted the Cal State Long Beach studio orchestra class Thursday afternoon. Students attending the session had the opportunity to work first-hand with a Hollywood professional and read through three of Broughton’s pieces with him conducting.

Broughton, an alumnus of CSULB, has composed the music for many films, including “Silverado,” “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “Lost in Space” and “Honey, I Blew Up the Kid.” He has also composed for television shows like “JAG” and “Tiny Toon Adventures.”

The studio orchestra class is run through the music department and provides music students the opportunity to gain experience sight-reading, recording and working with professional composers.

Past guest composers have included Michael Giacchino, best known as the composer for the Disney animated feature “The Incredibles” and for the “Medal of Honor” video game series.
