Our View: Students should help more campus renovations

The Academic Services building on upper campus has been in need of a tune-up. Thus, Cal State Long Beach has enlisted the help of 26 junior design students to fix the place up.

The white-walled hallway of the building, which is pressed up against the University Library, has been uninviting to students for years. The blue-metal benches are cold to the touch, not the ideal place to get homework done. Not to mention, there are only two wall outlets for students to use to charge their laptops.
With a budget of only $150,000, the students were faced with the task of redesigning the sizeable space. But they’re 49ers, so we expect that they’ve already drafted something great.

In turn, CSULB is saving money by having students, instead of an outside firm, redesign the building. The students themselves will not conduct the final renovation; an outside architect will be hired for that job.

However, student hands will be all over the design of the building.

The Daily 49er editorial board is glad to see the school using students to help redesign the AS building. We believe it is a great way for students to give back to the school.

Also, these design students get a hands-on opportunity to learn. They get to work within a budget and gain some valuable experience to put on their resumes.

In doing so, CSULB is doing its service to students by giving them a chance to put what they have learned in the classroom to use.

If this is successful, the editorial board believes CSULB should give more students the chance to make the campus a better place. As students, we spend a majority of our time on campus. We really are the best resource for these projects.

In cases like the bottle refill stations and the many different art sculptures spread throughout campus, students can do a great job of improving the campus environment.

We have the most drive to do so because it is our school. We have that sense of pride. Plus, we know what we want.

There are definitely a lot more buildings on campus that need renovation, maybe even before the AS building. If students are able to make a blank hallway a great place to study and get work done, then maybe they can bring good ideas to help renovate places like the Liberal Arts buildings.

Now, if only students could come up with a great idea to fix the parking situation.
