Long Beach State middle blocker Haleigh Hampton was selected as an honorable mention Blocker of the Year by Collegiate Volleyball Update on Friday. CVU selected one winner and four honorable mention finalists to honor five players nationally.
Hawaii’s Brittany Hewitt was the winner of the Blocker of the Year award. Ohio’s Katie Post, Colorado State’s Megan Plourde and Dayton’s Lindsay Fletemier were the other three honorable mention candidates.
Hampton had a standout debut season for the 49ers, earning first-team All-Big West Conference honors along with an All-Freshman team nod. On the year, Hampton led the 49ers in offensive efficiency, hitting .314, while ranking second on the team with 2.89 kills per set.
But it was her defensive abilities that were recognized in this award from CVU, which looked at a formula to note a player’s effect on the overall team’s defensive prowess. It also took into account blocks per game as a tally for the award.
Hampton ranked third nationally with 1.58 blocks per set, and finished with 182 total blocks (37 solo blocks and 145 block assists). Her block assists total tied her for the second-most in LBSU history with Elisha Thomas (2002).
Additionally, the 49ers led the Big West once again in opponent hitting percentage, and ranked eighth nationally as a team with 2.91 blocks per set.
