It seems that in terms of graduation, five years is the new four. With a lack of funding for higher education, graduation is becoming increasingly stressful for students. Tuition is increasing and class options are limited, but despite this, we still have opportunities to be grateful for, such as the option to enroll in CSULB’s winter session.
The winter session begins Jan. 3 and continues for three weeks, ending on Jan. 20. There are more than 200 day and evening courses being offered, and a maximum of four units can be taken toward your degree. The fee for winter session is $267 per unit, which may be costly for many, but at least we have the option, right?
Winter session isn’t mandatory. Right now, we can look at it as a bonus. Not everyone has to take it, but those who want to are welcome to. For some, the cost outweighs the benefits, for others, the thought of a timely graduation outweighs the price.
It’s very important and helpful for CSULB to hold a winter session. First, it aids students in the graduation process. A three-week school session is perfect for getting classes out of the way that don’t necessarily need much time to complete.
Also, CSULB’s winter session is open for anyone to take. No formal admission to the university is needed in order to enroll in winter session. The credits can be transferred to other colleges and universities as well. This opens up opportunities for students outside of CSULB, bringing in more money to the school.
Even more, if winter or summer sessions weren’t offered, classes during the semester would become more impacted. General education and capstone classes would be overwhelmed with students eager to graduate. Even if you aren’t taking winter or summer classes, it benefits you by lessening the number of students that need to take it.
We can only hope, despite the decrease in students enrolling in winter session, that money isn’t lost within the university by offering winter courses. If the number of students that enroll for winter session falls short of meeting the number anticipated, classes will need to be cut in order to not waste money on classes that don’t meet the student quota.
So, if you fall into the category of students who cannot necessarily afford winter session, understand that times are tough right now — for everyone, not only you. If the cost of winter session doesn’t exactly meet ends with your budget, don’t become frantic. You might not be getting those units out of the way, but at least there are more chances of classes being available come the spring term.
It’s unfortunate what’s going on with California’s higher education programs, but we should be thankful to say that we still have a winter session available.
Registration for winter session is open now. If the cost per unit is making the option questionable, you’re still able to register after Jan. 3 with a $25 late fee. Best to decide now than add another $25 to the $267 per unit. Happy studies!
