I bet we’re being robbed like the city of Bell. This recession has citizens gullible, desperate and forgetful. There’s a lot of talk about other countries’ resistance to free speech, but in an era where transparency was rightfully promised, Wikileaks met persecution and little support.
According to “Students for Quality Education,” CSU chancellor Charles Reed’s salary went from about $254,000 in 1998 to $451,500 today, while funding toward education is getting cut and school is already expensive as hell.
Although students are somewhat responsible for the uprisings for change in the Middle East, my peers forget that we are the ones who got Pres. Barack Obama elected. So eight years of destruction couldn’t be repaired in two years, that’s no excuse for refusing to vote.
SQE held a meeting on campus with panelists to discuss rising tuition and what could be done. Unfortunately, only 22 students out of the 35,000 enrolled attended.
Many colleagues are working to pay for the expensive privilege of getting an education, only some study for midterms, so what’s your excuse for not studying?
One CSULB panelist from out of state explained her situation after receiving numerous acceptance letters from various universities. She chose CSULB for its quality of education and affordability. She was polite enough to respond to the other schools to notify them of her decision, but one month before attending Long Beach State, she got an e-mail notifying her of a $500 fee increase, which added to her overwhelming living expenses.
The greatest countries in the world encourage education, but despite the fact, American politicians block education from low-income and working class families, minorities and the unemployed.
Chancellor Reed’s greedy technique to fixing our problem is to cut classes, raise tuition, lay off staff, reduce enrollment, force furloughs, increase class size and build more classrooms. This formula will maintain our position as the most powerful nation, right?
I grew up believing that I should not just value, but enjoy being educated. Well yeah, the children of “gardeners” and “maids” don’t stand a chance, though, how can having multiple jobs and studying all night long be fun? The rich racist politicians of this country are doing now what they did in the past, limiting potential.
Some colleagues have taken on loans that force payback once graduated, but there are no jobs to help pay the loans back. Many won’t return for further education because it’s too expensive.
Wisconsin’s union stripping wasn’t the start. The deficit raising Republicans have been taxing education, healthcare and food products for a cool minute.
I was watching Rachel Maddow’s show on MSNBC on March 21, and I learned that Wisconsin is to hand $140 million in business giveaways. Maine is approving a $30 million tax cut, Ohio has granted a $10 million tax break, Pennsylvania’s tax proposal is between $200 and $800 million, New Jersey is giving a $200 million tax cut to businesses, Florida is giving corporations a $1.5 billion tax cut, Michigan’s businesses get a $1.8 billion tax cut and the infamous Republicans of Arizona are pulling 100,000 poor people from healthcare. So no, don’t talk to me about hard choices. I’d rather vote Democrat than nothing at all.
Tax cuts for the wealthy and tax increases for the elderly, low-income or unemployed is today’s legacy. An uneducated person is easy to control. Get your bachelors degree but remember, it isn’t worth much more than a high school diploma, and at this rate, your nephews, nieces and children are going to have it far worse.
