Students donate hair to needy children

Junior Joshua Romano, left, senior Mohsin Khan and Jon Inake volunteer at the Locks of Love event in the University Student Union. The event was put together by electrical engineering graduate student Bryan Lojeck, far right.

For Daniel Martinez, chopping 10 inches of his hair off had dual perks: Looking good and helping kids with cancer.

“I’m about to graduate and I need to look good,” said Martinez, who hadn’t cut his hair since 2008. “I feel like a weight has been lifted off of me.”

The engineering major was one of three students who donated hair to Locks of Love at an event Friday that was hosted by the College of Engineering honor society and sponsored by Eta Kappa Nu (HKN).

It was the first Locks of Love donation event to be held in the University Student Union beauty salon Electric Hair.

According to the Locks of Love website, the organization is a public nonprofit organization that provides vacuum-fitted hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children with hair loss due to a medical diagnosis such as cancer.

Human hair creates the highest quality for hair prosthetics.

“It is the first time we have done a drive of this sort on campus so anything we get is great,” said Brian Lojeck, a member of HKN. “We have already exceeded my expectations.”

According to the Locks of Love website, there are guidelines for donations.

In order to donate, the hair has to be cut at least 10 inches in length and it must be bundled in a ponytail or braid. Bleached hair cannot be used toward the donation, but hair that has been dyed or permed is acceptable.

Due to campus safety requirements, Electric Hair stylists were required to do the hair cutting.

Electric Hair didn’t charge for the initial 10-inch cut, but any additional styling was standard price.

After the hair was cut, Lojeck and HKN packed it up and shipped it to the Locks of Love headquarters in Florida. A $25 gift card from the University Bookstore was awarded to the student with the heaviest donation.
