University coping with changing enrollment scenario

Cal State Long Beach does not know how many students it is planning on admitting in response to the CSU Board of Trustees’ recent decision to cut enrollment, according to Mike Hostetler, associate vice president for student services and dean of students.

The Board of Trustees announced Tuesday that, in addition to the $140 million cut, the Cal State University plans to cut enrollment by 10,000 students. At the Associated Students Inc. meeting March 9, Hostetler announced that, despite a possibility of an 18-35 percent cut, the university was planning on keeping admission steady.

It is uncertain how much of the university’s budget will be on the chopping block. The cut is dependent on Gov. Jerry Brown’s ability to put three taxes on the June ballot that would extend $9.2 billion in temporary taxes imposed in February of 2009 under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“It looks like, now, [Brown] will not be able to do so,” Hostetler said. “A lot of people, including me, thought a handful of Republicans would join Democrats in getting this on the ballot and at least give the voters of California a chance to let this pass.”

The Enrollment Planning committee is now responsible for making a recommendation to the vice presidents and president of the university, according to Hostetler. Freshmen have already been accepted to the university for the fall semester, however, transfer students are still being reviewed.

“An adjustment could still be made at this time, but it is pretty late in the game to be making these cuts,” Hostetler said.
