CSULB Week of Welcome kicks off

The Week of Welcome began Tuesday at the University Student Union Southwest Terrace with dancing, free food and live music from KBEACH Radio. The theme for Tuesday’s co-sponsored event was Spring Sports Fair.

The fair was sponsored by Associated Students Inc. (ASI), Intramural Sports Department and the Athletics Department. Other organizations and clubs such as the hockey and roller hockey teams as well as the juggling and Kung Fu clubs were also at the fair.

Teresa Ruiz, communications coordinator of ASI, said she believes the Week of Welcome is a good way for students to get involved with the university.

“The event is a perfect way for students to know more about the clubs and organizations going on at Long Beach State,” Ruiz said.

There were also multiple demonstrations held at the fair, including performances by the Break Dance Club and Karate Club.

Senior computer science major Brian Wright, who is a member of the Break Dance Club, demonstrated to students how to break dance.

“Break dancing is another positive way to express yourself, and the club is a good way to unify students,” Wright said.

Freshmen Jose Hernandez enjoyed the fair and said he felt it was a good way to get involved with the university.

“Even though I wouldn’t join any of these clubs, the entertainment and free food makes the fair worth coming to,” Hernandez said.

The Athletic Department had several spring student-athletes pass out schedules for their upcoming season.

“The idea is to pump up students and support their team,” said Jamie Pollock, the special projects coordinator. “Our men’s basketball team is doing really well this season and we want to get as many people out there as possible.”

Ramon Castillo, an ASI representative, was at the fair to inform students about the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

“The center benefits and creates opportunities for students who are not familiar with the university,” Castillo said. “We also encourage students to vote and let their voices be heard. Our goal is to make this the biggest election ever.”

The Week of Welcome will continue throughout the week. The Club and Organization Fair will take place today at 11 a.m. on The Friendship Walk.
