If only all breakups could be this funny

If you are looking for a comedy that pokes fun at just about everything (and everyone), this is the one for you. Actresses, surfers, the television and movie industries, and musicians – no one is safe from being made fun of.

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is the latest film produced by Judd Apatow, who brought to America funny films like “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up” and “Superbad.”

A few months ago, the simple black-and-white advertisements of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” intrigued people to check out the blog listed at the bottom, sparking an interest in the film. We all wanted to know, who Sarah Marshall was.

Sarah Marshall, played by Kristen Bell, is a star television actress who plays the hot blonde with a gun in the hit show “Crime Scene,” while her boyfriend, Peter Bretter, played by Jason Segel, is the composer for the dramatic background music.

About five minutes into the movie, the so-called “happy couple” calls it quits after a five-year-long relationship. Well, they don’t really call it quits -Sarah dumps him while he’s naked in the living room. The entire scene had me cringing and praying for Peter to put the towel back around his slightly pudgy waist. You get full frontal shots and a few of the rear (bending over and all). I thought it was a bit unnecessary, but it wasn’t unexpected after seeing other movies produced by Apatow.

During the breakup, Sarah utters the five words that make every end of relationship a million times worse – “There’s someone else, I’m sorry.”

Almost immediately after, Peter falls into a downward spiral of depression, drinking and random women.

Thinking that the best way to get over a breakup is to take a vacation alone, Peter heads out for a well-needed solitary paradise. Although the idea is good in theory, it fails when he decides to go to the one place he knows his ex has wanted to go to all her life, Turtle Bay in Hawaii.

While Peter tries to overcome his grief, he, of course, runs into Sarah and her new rock star boy toy Aldous Snow, played by Russell Brand. From here the pathetic but humorous drama unfolds.

At this point, one can’t help but feel sorry for Peter. His misfortunate and pitiful state just makes you want to reach into the film and give him a hug. He’s a complete mess due that he is still obsessed with his failed relationship.

Sarah, on the other hand, looks hot and doesn’t seem to be too heartbroken. When she sees Peter at the resort, she gets over it fast by getting frisky with Aldous.

Luckily, Peter meets a beautiful Rachel Jensen, played by Mila Junis, at the resort and she takes his mind of his heartache for a while – hence the title, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”

Overall I liked it; I definitely recommend it to my friends, but not my parents – I don’t think the sex and nudity would go over well with that crowd.
