Team USA fared well in its debut under the helm of Dirtbags head coach Mike Weathers, dominating the Oil Can Boyd All-Stars 9-1 at Wachonah Park in Pittsfield, Mass.
Six players scored runs, and the U.S. (1-0) scored two runs a piece in three consecutive innings to take a 7-0 lead after four innings. Team USA had more runs than Oil Can Boyd (0-1) had hits (five).
Former Dirtbag Danny Espinosa did not get on base despite his three at-bats, but recorded two putouts and an assist at shortstop. Espinosa, in his second term with Team USA, was an All-Big West Conference second team selection last season.
Weathers, meanwhile, is representing Team USA for the third time. He was an assistant in 2003, when the U.S. won a silver medal in the Pan American Games behind former Dirtbag pitcher Jered Weaver, according to the Long Beach State Sports Information Department. Weathers was also selected to play for Team USA in 1970.
Team USA is currently playing trial games in preparation for its five-game showdown with Chinese Taipei, beginning June 29 in Burlington, N.C.
