President Alexander issues statement regarding Virginia Tech shootings

In response to the shootings this morning at Virginia Tech, Cal State Long Beach President F. King Alexander sent out a campuswide e-mail Monday night, stating that the university “has policies and procedures in place should we need to respond to a situation on our own campus.”

Alexander highlighted the university’s Emergency Operations Plan that “addresses an entire spectrum of contingencies, ranging from relatively minor incidents to large-scale disasters.”

He also referred to the university’s emergency Web site page, which has the ability to be quickly activated and updated to alert the campus and surrounding communities if a situation arises.

“Even with this advanced planning, however, there is no guarantee that events such as the Virginia Tech shooting can be prevented,” Alexander said. “All we can do is prepare and lessen the likelihood of such an occurrence through our own personal awareness and mutual sense of responsibility.”
