For a second straight match, the Long Beach State women’s tennis team (8-3) dropped another close contest, 4-3, against Boston College on Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
Head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said she could not pinpoint the exact cause for the team’s performance.
“The coaching staff is going to start looking for answers because these [losses] are unacceptable,” Hilt-Costello said. “That’s just flat out where it’s at.”
LBSU junior Anais Dallara added: “Some people do better one day, the others on another day. We just have to make sure we can all play good at the same time.”
In the singles matches, Dallara once again dominated her opponent, outdueling Alex Kelleher, 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile. 49ers junior Rachel Manasse showed toughness at the No. 5 spot by coming back from behind to win her match against Olga Khmylevl in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Possibly the most heartbreaking loss of the day came at No. 3 play, as senior Deborah Armstrong fell to Katerina Gajic, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, in what could have been the victory-clinching match.
Junior Julie Lazar’s return to the lineup was not pleasant. The junior lost her match against Katherine Attwell, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6. Sophomore Sarah Cantlay was also upset at No. 4, losing to Veronica Corning, 6-3, 6-3.
LBSU sophomore Jakin Alawi lost to Erina Kikuchi at the No. 2 slot, 6-2, 6-3, to round out the scores.
One thing that has been consistent is The Beach’s play in the doubles competition.
The No. 1 tandem, Dallara and Armstrong, beat their counterpart, Kelleher and Khmylev, 8-1. The No. 3 duo of Cantlay and Luzar won the doubles point, beating Attwell and Gajic, 8-5.
Manasse and Alawi could not deliver the sweep, losing to Corning and Kikuchi, 8-4, at No. 2.
The Beach’s next match-up will come against 29th-ranked Sacramento State on Saturday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
