Setter, midfielder earn player of the week nods

When you post the nation’s first quadruple-double of the season, a feat your head coach doesn’t recall happening in the program’s history, you can be sure to expect some recognition for the effort.

Long Beach State senior setter Ashley Lee was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for women’s volleyball Monday morning.

Lee recorded 10 kills, 10 blocks, 13 digs and 50 assists in the 49ers’ five-set victory at UC Riverside last Saturday.

“I’ve never seen it,” head coach Brian Gimmillaro said while laughing. “You know what’s funny about it? If we play well it wouldn’t have happened.”

She also became the 20th player in the nation this season to post a triple-double.

Her big week started with a 39-assist, 13-dig double-double Friday in a sweep over UC Irvine at the Walter Pyramid. Lee became the 10th player in LBSU history to collect 1,000 career digs and, in the process, became just the fourth 49er to amass 1,000 career assists and 1,000 career digs.

The La Habra Heights native joined Misty May-Treanor, Sheri Sanders and Nicole Vargas as the only 49ers to accomplish the feat.

Lindsay Bullock’s first career hat trick led to the Big West weekly honor announced Monday.

Bullock’s three goals helped LBSU cruise past Cal State Fullerton, 5-2, on the road Sunday night. She became the first 49er to score thee times in a match since Hayley Bolt in 2008.
