Women’s Volleyball: Balanced effort keys seventh straight victory

The 49er women’s volleyball team swept UC Davis, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22, Friday night at Upper Hickey Gym to push its winning streak to seven matches.

Outside hitter Caitlin Ledoux tallied 13 kills to help the ‘Niners maintain sole possession of first place in the Big West Conference. The sophomore also had nine digs to share team-high honors with libero Lauren Minkel.

Senior Brittney Herzog chipped in with 10 kills on .471 hitting, while Michelle Osunbor added nine at a .643 clip to supplement three blocks.

LBSU (11-3, 4-0 Big West) also received eight digs from setter Ashley Lee, who also had three blocks — one solo — to go with 42 assists.

The 49ers resume conference play Saturday night in Stockton against Pacific at 7 p.m.

Women’s Tennis: The Beach scores perfect 10 in Fullerton

Beach women’s tennis team wrapped up its first day at the Fullerton Invitational a perfect 10-0 after winning seven singles and three doubles matches at the Titan Courts.

All six ‘Niner players competing remained in the main draw, including No. 121 Anais Dallara, who notched two wins in her first taste of singles action this fall.

The Frenchwoman defeated Cal Poly’s Alexa Lee 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of Flight A singles before squeaking out a win over Loyola Marymount’s Elisaveta Pironkova, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Jaklin Alawi and Deborah Armstrong also competed in Flight A, advanced with victories after receiving first round byes. Alawi breezed past Dori Kiss of Cal State Los Angeles, 6-0, 6-2, while Armstrong downed UC Irvine’s Rebecca Kwan 7-6 (3), 6-2.

In Flight B, Anna Jeczmionka received a bye into the second round where she cruised by UCI’s Miranda Young, 6-2, 6-3. Julie Luzar remained unbeaten in fall singles action at 5-0 after defeating Cal State San Bernardino’s Veronica Dimas, 6-3, 6-3, and UCI’s Hannah Holladay, 6-2, 6-4.

In Flight A doubles action, the team of Alawi and Rachel Manasse defeated Tiffany Mai and Erin Wiesner of Cal State Fullerton, 8-2. Armstrong and Dallara pulled out a win over LMU’s Jasmin Heckel and Pironkova.

Flight B doubles saw Jeczmionka and Luzar dispatch Angelique Corpuz and Roxanne Plata of UC Riverside, 8-4.

The tournament continues through Saturday and Sunday.
