The Student Recreation and Wellness Center at Cal State Long Beach will be hosting its second annual push-up contest on Oct. 26 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Main Gym A.
The goal of the contest is to get people to participate in activities at the SRWC, according to Tony Nuñez, lead trainer at the recreation center.
“It improves our ability to get stuff out to [students],” Nuñez said.
Nuñez said they expect 80 to 100 students to attend the event, which will be open without sign-ups.
He also said the goal for the competitors will be to do the most push-ups. The top male and female each get a travel trainer, which is a to-go workout set that comes with resistance bands, a balance ball, a yoga mat and a carry bag.
Ashley Cappel-McKeachie, membership services and marketing coordinator for ASI Recreation, said she thinks these events are helpful because they provide students with a healthy distraction from school-related stress, like midterms.
According to Nuñez, competitors will be working with personal trainers to learn how to do a proper push-up. Men will do regular push-ups and the women will do modified push-ups on their knees.
Senior Chelsee Leyshock said she likes the events at the SRWC and loves the facility.
She said she likes that it promotes being active and that it’s good for fostering stress relief during midterms. Leyshock said she personally won’t be participating in the push-up competition, but she would if it was a sit-up competition.
“I think it’s good,” Leyshock said. “It gets everyone involved.”
