CSULB parking system to change next semester

Cal State Long Beach will be making changes to its parking program for the fall 2010 semester to offer new benefits to students who purchase their parking passes online.

The new system is expected to be activated April 15.

“We’re changing the way we process the permits,” said Gregory Pascal, University Police communication supervisor.

CSULB has been posting fliers around campus that say, “Parking made easier. No more waiting in line.”

Some of the benefits of the new program include immediate response orders, order tracking and temporary parking printouts.

In previous years when students ordered their parking permits, CSULB would have to wait until a quota of permit requests were made before they could send out the order and get the permits to students.

“Right now, we’re trying to get everyone online,” said Pita Taase, service coordinator of Parking Field Services. “This will allow for fewer lines, even though the lines have gotten better.”

Even with the push for more of a Web-based approach, the cashiers window at Brotman Hall will still be open for students to buy their parking passes if students have to pay by cash or ATM, according to Pascal.

In previous years, parking passes purchased late were only available from the cashiers window at Brotman Hall, but will soon be available online.

In addition, the program will feature a temporary parking permit printout that will accompany a parking permit purchase.

“If you had to wait for a grant to come through and had to buy your permit the third week of classes, you get a printout that says you’ve bought it online,” Taase said. “You can also track the permit until it arrives.”

One of the reasons the upgrade is underway is to replace the current system, which “took to long,” according to Pascal.

“The old system was very homegrown,” said Pascal. “We never had the availability we have now.”
