Rockstar Games, the mastermind behind the Grand Theft Auto series, invites players back to the fictional city of Los Santos with new characters, schemes and features.
In Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar has created a living world that constantly evolves with every event. A simple stroll down the street can instantly change once you turn a corner and find a shoot-out between the police and criminals.
The new version of GTA is full of random events at every turn. In an early mission in the game, one of the main characters found his wife cheating, so he decided to pull the man’s house down a mountain with his tow truck.
One of the biggest differences in this version is that Rockstar added three main characters. In earlier versions of the game, the storyline followed one protagonist and a myriad of people who helped him along his journey. In GTA V, you can freely switch between the three main characters: Michael De Santa, an ex-bank robber with a sweet deal from the FBI; his polar opposite Trevor Phillips, a psychotic trailer park drug dealer; and Franklin Clinton, a south Los Santos ex-street gangster.
The new characters, especially De Santa, are more advanced at gunplay while others specialize in hijacking and speeding away skillfully.
The character background features new developments as well. De Santa is presented as a middle-aged man living out his retirement with his ungrateful family who have been spoiled by his stolen money.
Phillips exemplifies the detail put into the new characters, and his addition seems to be Rockstar’s way of adding comical insanity just because they can. He can enter a blind rage mode where he takes less damage while dealing significantly more. If things don’t go his way, everyone around him will pay.
The attention to detail is astounding, and it shows throughout the entirety of the game. Whether you are walking in an area that mimics a familiar Californian city, or passing civilians who are talking on their phones, it is an interesting development that differs from past versions.
After seamlessly switching between characters, you may find them mingling in the streets, watching TV at home, or riding bikes on the beach. They’re living their lives and not just sitting in their houses waiting to be played.
The meat of GTA V can be summed up in the story and heist missions. There are a number of missions and events outside the main story, but the intensity of the heist missions stand out above all else.
There is a quiet option and a guns blazing option, depending on how you want to execute the heist. After preparing the crew and starting the mission, the goal is to take as much as possible. If you chose the right person for each role in the operation, the heist will be successful and go through as planned.
The game was released on September 17th. According to the Rockstar Games website, the online multi-player, which was released on Monday, is expected to accommodate more players than the previous multi-player.
