Sophomore communicative disorders major Heather Swan said her current job in the University Student Union makes her a good candidate for ASI Treasurer.
Swan, who is the student buildings supervisor at the University Student Union, said her job allows her to interact with student organizations and deal with funds. According to the information center at the USU, Swan’s job includes working with the USU’s full-time staff and coordinating and planning events. She is also a member of Delta Zeta sorority, which she said has helped her develop skills that she would use as treasurer.
“I get a feel [for] what they are looking for and what they need,” she said. “Already CSULB has a great reputation for [making the most out of student funds], but these clubs and organizations accentuate that, and so we want to be able to make the best out of that without making money a constant issue.”
“I’m definitely a people person, so I’m not afraid to approach people,” Swan said. “I’m not that person that I want people to see only one time on a poster. I’m constantly in the student union. I’m walking around school. I want them to approach me. I want them to question what I’m doing with my position.”
Swan said she is also good with conflict and confrontation and is also able to take on many different roles.
Swan said one of her main goals would be to make ASI more accessible to students.
“It seems like a lot of people are trying to make it more of a career instead of making it for the students,” Swan said. “I want to see ASI as a tool for organizations, as a tool for students.”
She said she has noticed that a lot of students are confused when it comes to fees.
“It’s frustrating, I know,” Swan said. “Even with the campaigning for the rec center, I still had people coming up to me and asking if the fees start immediately, and, even with all that campaigning, they were still confused about the charges for it.”
