Home for Halloween

Halloween 2011 lands on a Monday, but you can still go HAM this weekend. If you’ve stopped trick-or-treating because of age discrimination, here are six alternatives that will surely get you into the swing of the festivities:

“Creepy Pastas”

It’s not edible. In fact, it’s pretty hard to digest because it comes in the form of a short horror, scary or paranormal story. Creepy pastas float around the internet like urban legends from movies like Paranormal Activity or The Blair Witch Project. Here are some of my favorites: Candle Cove, The Dionaea House and The Marble Hornets.

Donnie Darko / Newmarket Films

Movie Marathon

Invite some friends to your place and alternate between favorite horror movies and cult classics like The Shining and Donnie Darko. In between screaming and covering your face, you can laugh at some of the more seemingly ridiculous ones like Hobo with a Shotgun.

“Pumpkin of the Dead” by Ray Villafene  / Ivo M. Vermeulen

Pumpkin Carving

Sculptor Ray Villafene carved the world’s current largest pumpkin that weighed almost one ton. For the rest of us, there’s always Pumpkin Carving 101 for all pumpkin queries.

“Hallowmeme” Party

Costumes can be expensive and complicated like relationships and organic chemistry. Meme-themed costumes are simpler to make and even LOL-worthy. Dress your nose as a Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtle Nose or sport a pair of Buscemeyes.

Long Beach Events

The fourth annual Zombie Walk in Downtown Long Beach is tonight. It’s free and encouraged that you attend because there will be an attempt at breaking the world record for most people dancing to the late Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Long Beach Comic and Horror Con is the ultimate dress up party from Oct. 29-30. Meet up with comic book artists and writers as well as some filmmakers like the Robot Chicken panel. Admission is $20-50 with a student discount.

Sweet Tooth Indulgence

Make a homemade pumpkin pie, decorate some cupcakes or create other delicious treats for yourself and loved ones. Try a recipe that Real Simple’s Melissa Roberts created from using excess Halloween candy.
