Former Cal State Long Beach President John Stephen “Steve” Horn died today of complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 79.
According to a statement issued by his son, Horn strengthened CSULB through a time of growth; He served as university president from 1970 to 1988. Horn was a Congressman representing the 38th District of California from 1993 to 2000.
At CSULB, Horn reformed the general education requirements and created programs for senior citizens and disabled students, according to the statement.
President F. King Alexander issued a statement today sending condolences to Horn’s family, friends and colleagues.
“Our campus benefitted greatly from his leadership and vision,” Alexander wrote. “Steve was responsible for establishing many programs that set the campus apart in terms of how students and the community were served… Cal State Long Beach is a stronger university for Steve Horn’s leadership.”
CSULB honored Horn and his wife of 57 years, Nini Moore Horn, with the naming of the Steve and Nini Horn Center in 2003.
The family requests that any donations be made to the University Library via the CSULB Foundation.
