CSULB students to sing ‘Opera Masterpieces’ this weekend

This weekend will display some of the most angelic voices on campus, as the 24 singers of the Opera Institute of Cal State Long Beach perform at the Daniel Recital Hall on Saturday and Sunday evening.

“The Opera Masterpieces” is a two-hour event comprised of several musical excerpts dating back to the classics of 18th century Mozart, to Jazzy compositions from the early 1940s.

According to director David Anglin, who will also play the piano during the performance, the show is a fairly inexpensive opportunity to witness some of the great operatic pieces throughout musical history.

“As most people know, Opera is not cheap and is rare to see on campus,” Anglin said. “This will be a great opportunity to see how young singers learn and develop their craft. I really think it will blow students away to hear some of the voices of their peers.”

The composition itself also derives from countries all over the world and will exhibit a compilation of both comedy and tragedy in several different languages, including Italian, French and Spanish.

The talent within this group runs so high that they have been invited to the Aspen Festival, The Music Academy of the West, Glimmerglass Young Artist Program, The International Lyric Academy in Rome and Opera Works in Los Angeles. Some of the students who have graduated and moved on from the Opera Institute have also gone on to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, The Cincinnati College-Conservatory, the Boston Conservatory and New York University.

Next to Anglin, Stephanie Vlahos, who is currently on the faculty of the Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program with the LA Opera, will guest direct.

“The Opera Masterpieces” will take place this Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. at Daniel Recital Hall. Tickets are available to purchase at the door for $10 for general admission and $7 for students with a valid ID.
