Zombie apocalypse hits Long Beach’s Fourth Street

Zombie protestors lead the group, while holding signs that declare their zombieness.

Zombies invaded the streets of Long Beach this past weekend as the 3rd annual Fourth Street Zombie Walk took place.

The event was hosted by MondoCelluloid.com and had donations go toward their new organization, Long Beach Cinematheque. The Zombie Walk event featured ghoulish activities with cooperating businesses from Junipero Avenue to Cherry Avenue.

Festive activities from cooperating businesses included various live performances, morbidly-themed food and drinks, make-up stations for zombification and a flash mob dance performance during the evening.

There was a mix of young and old zombies — all dressed up and ready to snack on brains. The crowd consisted of ordinary zombies, crazy killer clowns, zombified brides with grooms, as well as doctors and nurses.

There were special appearances by zombie dogs, Zombie Jesus and an eccentric zombie riding on a giant rubber ducky.

During the Walk, there were both slow and fast moving zombies, as they made their way to the Art Theatre. The zombies posed for spectator photos and even creeped up behind some of the guests to scare them.

The main attraction, the Zombie Walk, began at Portfolio Coffeehouse. Ghouls stopped by Portfolio for Zombie Lattes and got amped up for their roles in a mini zombie apocalypse.

Portfolio had an energetic vibe as employees strived to handle the large influx of customers, while The VooDuo played live music in the back of the coffeehouse.

“I can actually hear my voice!” exclaimed one employee serving up a latte as The VooDuo took a break between their booming rock songs.

As it neared walking time, hordes of zombies began to congregate on the street corners outside of Portfolio. Zombies and humans alike traversed down until they reached the front of the Art Theater on East Fourth Street, between Saint Louis Avenue and Cherry Avenue.

The walk was led by a group of zombie protestors, who held signs with zombified phrases like “What Would Zombies Do?,” “Zombie and Proud,” “Make Zombies Not War,” “Just a Zombie” and several others.

As the ghouls reached the Art Theatre, the march came to a stop and more zombies gathered in front of the theatre within minutes. Late zombies were given a chance to catch up before the 9:30 p.m. screening of the cult-classic film, “Shaun of the Dead.”

There is no better way to start Halloween than by seeing a mini zombie apocalypse — it could happen for real at some point in the future!
