Cal State Long Beach’s Master of the Fine Arts Open Studios event allowed Master of Fine Arts programs to open up their studios and the minds of the public on Sunday.
The featured artists’ original works involved paint, ceramics, fibers and other materials.
MFA student Jennifer Reifsneider welcomed visitors into the fibers studios with information on the art behind fibers. Reifsneider said she uses fiber materials in her artwork to express the division between experience and memory.
“This is the first time that the event takes place in the spring,” Reifsneider said. “[The event] normally takes place in the fall. We’re all just waiting to see what happens, hopefully a lot of people will come through.”
Students of the MFA ceramics program, like Julia Haft-Candell, talked about the importance of having events like “Open Studios” in the art department.
“As an artist you can make all the art you want,” said Haft-Candell. “But any opportunity you have to get people to see your work is important.”
The MFA printmaking program showed off the techniques behind the student’s creations. Visitors were allowed to feel handmade stamps, sketchbooks and art in the making.
“Having people come through open studios gives them the chance to check out the process and the progress,” CSULB student Christian Ward said. “Unlike a show, it’s a more casual environment, viewers get to see some of our half-baked ideas.”
