The newest Harry Potter film is the best and most dramatic of the series. The sixth installment, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” is probably the most significant section of the seven-part saga.
In the previous film Harry and Dumbledore faced off against the most powerful wizard in the world, Voldemort, in the Ministry of Magic. In the newest film, the drama doesn’t stop as Harry and Dumbledore learn more about Voldemort’s past, so that they can discover ways to defeat him. The Death Eaters are also preparing to attack Hogwarts. Harry’s worst enemy, Draco Malfoy, is hiding things in a cabinet in the Borgin and Burke’s store. Professor Snape also makes an unbreakable vow with the Death Eaters to help Draco. With all the conspiring going on, someone is bound to die.
The actors pull off their most dramatic performance yet. Michael Gambon, who plays Dumbledore, is the true star of the show. By the end of the film, he becomes a devastated figure, torn up by his duty to help Harry.
Alan Rickman, who plays Professor Snape, is also powerful as the flawed but compassionate villain. He brings even more conflicting emotions of grief and anger into his deadpan voice.
Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter also takes on numerous acting personas, flirting with girls, comforting his heart-broken friend Hermione and bravely protecting Ginny Weasley.
This is also a visually stunning film. The scenes in which Harry looks into Dumbledore’s pensieve, a watery pool tinted with blue and black colors, are especially eerie. Harry gets to watch many moments from Voldemort’s creepy past in the water-filled pensieve, with marvelous ink strands animated via computer-generated images.
The evil Bellatrix Lestrange sets a grass meadow on fire and shatters all the windows in the dining hall with a wave of her magic wand and the accompaniment of horrific special effects.
With all Harry Potter films, many scenes in the book are cut from the film.
Fans will no doubt complain that director David Yates left out many of rage-filled arguments between Snape and Harry. For example, Snape charges Harry with multiple detentions and tampers with Harry’s potions book from the “Half-Blood Prince.”
Enough of the main story is intact to make for a magnificent film. In fact, the actors performed so well that the heart-wrenching movie might even get nominated for best picture. This is definitely the must-see film this summer, the one that everyone will remember for a long time.
