Cal State Long Beach faculty and staff will be honored in two events at The Pointe in the Walter Pyramid today and tomorrow for their outstanding examples of published works, research and innovative accomplishments.
The All-University Celebration of Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity will showcase a variety of student and faculty projects today from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid.
Projects range from a wind turbine patented by two professors to a rocket designed by students.
The Social Science Research and Instructional Council’s 32nd Research Conference will highlight some of the best social science research projects by students throughout the state from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday in the University Student Union Ballrooms.
“These events are part of our efforts to promote and enhance support for research, scholarly and creative activity,” said CSULB Provost Karen Gould.
The purpose of the All-University Celebration of Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity is to showcase outstanding examples of recent and ongoing research, published works, and the creative accomplishments of faculty and students, according to Communication Specialist Linda Fontes of the Division of Academic Affairs.
The conference has been organized by Chicano and Latino Studies professor Jose Moreno, with the campus planning committee. SSRIC, the Chancellor’s Office, CSULB’s Office of the Provost and the Dean’s Office of the College of Liberal Arts will support the two events.
“The research, scholarly and creative activity being presented May 1 and 2 represent a broad range of research and creative works that enhance classroom teaching, generate new knowledge and advance the disciplines,” Gould said.
A LOX-methane-powered rocket developed by students in the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering will be displayed for the first known flight test of the propellants.
The SAE engineering society formula race car designed, built and used by students in competitions will also be on display, as well as the 26-foot “D.R.Nelson,” the largest boat in CSULB’s marine biology research fleet.
“It is my hope that both of these celebrations – the All-University Celebration of Research, Scholarly and Creative Activity and the Student Research Conference – will shine a light on some of the tremendous accomplishments of our faculty and students and further our sense of pride in the breadth and quality of research, discovery and creative work at CSULB and throughout the state,” Gould said.
Today’s event, organized by Jim Till, interim associate vice president for research and external support, will honor one graduate and one undergraduate student who have conducted outstanding research, scholarly or creative activity. It will recognize two faculty members: one who has served for student engagement and one whose research, scholarly or creative activity has had a significant impact.
The conference Friday is modeled on professional conferences in social science. Forty students from throughout the state will present their research. Three students will receive awards for best undergraduate, best graduate and best use of quantitative data.
Admission to both events is free and open to the public for both days.
