LBSU athletics’ best moments of the week

The women's volleyball players discuss a strategy during a time-out last Saturday.

Men’s Water Polo – Tomassi Tallies Ten

Senior Reid Tomassi notched a career-high seven goals against Pomona-Pitzer college during the Inland Empire Classic this past weekend. The seven goals were just one shy of matching the Long Beach State record of eight. He totaled 10 in all during the tournament. Tomassi’s seven points led the 49ers to a 19-5 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.

Tomassi’s performance wasn’t the only high of the weekend. Soon thereafter, the 49ers built off of Tomassi’s momentum to defeat La Verne 22-3, the 22 points being the 49ers’ season high. Twelve 49ers contributed goals, with five scoring multiples.

Jeff Greenwood and Justin Koeppen had multi-goal games against both Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne. Greenwood turned in two 4-goal performances while Koeppen scored two against Pomona-Pitzer and four against La Verne.

The 49er defense was virtually unstoppable against both teams. Goalie Steve MacKenzie allowed five goals against Pomona-Pitzer and notched four goalie saves while playing the entire game. Goalie Derek Wiebe-Bailey topped MacKenzie’s performance by allowing three goals and tallying eight goalie saves of his own against La Verne.

The 49ers will travel to the Bay Area this week for the NorCal Tournament hosted by Cal. They enter with a 4-0 record and a 17.5 goal average.

Women’s Soccer – Second Half Shutout

Although the women’s soccer team’s road trip last week ended with a sweep by its Carolina opponents, the 49ers fought hard, as was evident by the team’s second-half shutout of Clemson.

On Friday afternoon in South Carolina, the No. 23-ranked 49ers struggled facing the No. 20-ranked Tigers. Down 2-0 in the 37th minute, Nikki Myers cut the Tigers’ lead in half by scoring from 45 yards out. The 49er defense rallied in the second half not allowing any shots, but the offense couldn’t get the job done, as they fell 2-1 to Clemson.

The loss was the 49ers’ second to an Atlantic Coast Conference game last week. Long Beach State fell 1-0 to No. 24-ranked Wake Forest after holding the Demon Deacons scoreless for nearly 50 minutes. In the 50th minute Wake Forest scored the game-winner, edging out the 49ers. Kristen Keifer attempted two shots to tie the game for the 49ers, but saw both shots go left of the goal in the 65th and 68th minutes.

Goalie Liz Ramos had three saves on 14 Deacon shots.

Women’s soccer is on the road again this week, taking on BYU today. The team return for a 2-game home stand this weekend hosting Oklahoma and Baylor.

Women’s Volleyball – Seminole Sweep

While Alexis Crimes blazed the way with her 14 kills, it was libero Cynthia Buggs and outside hitter Quincy Verdin who put in the best defensive performances of the night.

Buggs turned in a career-high 17 digs, while Verdin had a career-high two aces and nine kills, en route to the 49ers 3-game win over Florida State (30-22, 30-28, 30-23) at the Pyramid.

The 49ers easily downed the Seminoles. Florida State’s 26 attack errors and 12 service errors gave the 49ers ample room to capitalize. Service errors began the 49ers’ runs, and once they took the lead they never looked back.

Crimes was her usual self, capitalizing on every chance available. Aside from her 14 kills, Crimes hit at a sky-high .542 clip, also tallying nine digs.

Long Beach State played solid all night, hitting at a .287 clip and making only 12 attack errors. Ashley Lee added 7 kills, while Michaela Hasalikova notched eight. Nicole Vargas turned in 32 assists.

Women’s volleyball travels to Colorado this week for Denver University’s tournament. While in Denver the 49ers will take on Denver, Washington State and Ohio.
