KROQ to give free haircuts at CSULB

A world record will hopefully be broken at Cal State Long Beach this Thursday when Sam “The Armenian Comedian” Menesian from KROQ’s “Kevin and Bean Show” will attempt to cut and style 251 heads of hair in the Elektric Hair salon on campus.

According to KROQ, Menesian is a licensed stylist who will be offering students free haircuts from 6 a.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday if necessary to break the record. Italian stylist Christian Petrillo set the current record of 250 haircuts on June 18, 2004, in Hamburg, Germany, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

“I’m going to kick his ass,” Menesian said of Petrillo. “I know how to cut hair more than he does. I’m Armenian!”

Ralph Garman, Kevin and Bean’s entertainment correspondent, will be broadcasting live from the salon and interviewing students waiting in line as well as asking students how they like their new “do’s.” Anybody who gets their haircut will also get a commemorative T-shirt.

“I’ve been cutting hair since 1978,” Menesian said. “I’m a professional haircutter. I have precision scissors. I can cut all lengths of hair, from the earlobe to the buttcrack to the belly button, all in five minutes. I know my technique.”

Elektric Hair is a privately owned full-service salon on campus. It is located on the second level of the University Student Union. The salon is owned by Brandee Tilles, who is married to KROQ producer Lightning.

If Menesian is to break the record, he would have to cut and style over 10 heads of hair each hour. Menesian claims he is up to the task, but he will need 251 volunteers. That’s where he’s hoping students will come in.

“I would like their confidence in me,” Menesian said. “Everybody is going to look so stylish when I’m done.”

Menesian has been a frequent guest on the morning radio show since the early ’90s. He also does stand-up comedy at the Comedy Store in Hollywood. Haircutting isn’t his only hobby, but it’s one he is passionate about.

“I can do two haircuts at the same time,” Menesian said. “It has to be identical twin brothers or sisters, one on my left and one on my right. I use one pair of clippers and jump back and forth. I can also cut hair standing on one leg with my eyes closed like the Chicken Dance.”

While his techniques may be a little unorthodox, it promises to be a memorable event for all involved. Check daily49er.wpengine.com for updates on his progress toward the record on Thursday.
