CSULB faculty protest against fee increases

Faculty members from Cal State Long Beach and other universities protest against fee increases, excessive executive perks and lack of classes yesterday.

The faculty of Cal State Long Beach held an Informational Picket in front of Brotman Hall Tuesday to inform faculty and students of the high tuition fees and their three-year contracts, which is on extension for 20 months.

“No faculty is missing classes, we’re here because we care about CSULB. We see student fees rise, larger classes and students can’t get the classes they need to graduate,” said Elizabeth Hoffman, an English lecturer and representative for the Center for Faculty Development.

“Not doing a strike but an informational picket. We haven’t had a new contract in two years and a paid increase since 2003,” said Lydia Sondhi, an associate professor and president of the California Faculty Association.

“I saw a poster of the video and researched the group. They are actually fighting for students and I didn’t want the tuition fees to increase,” said Helen Doe, a freshman political science and communications major.

Over the last few years, students’ tuition fees have gone up, as stated in a press release from the California Faculty Association. Other universities that have also faced tuition increases are Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
