UNLV too much for the 49ers

The Long Beach State women’s basketball team won its first game of the season against host San Diego last Wednesday, but the 49ers were unable to carry over that momentum against UNLV Saturday night at The Walter Pyramid, losing 61-44.

LBSU (1-7) scored the first bucket of the second half to take a 33-32 lead, but were outscored 29-11 for the rest of the game.

“I thought we played really well in the first half,” said LBSU head coach Mary Hegarty. “But once we fell behind, we lost our composure and panicked a little bit. Then it kind of snowballed on us.”

Sequoia Holmes led UNLV (3-4), almost compiling a triple-double, scoring 16 points, dishing 10 assists and grabbing nine rebounds.

LBSU shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, but shot just 22.7 percent in the second half. From 3-point range, the 49ers were 2-for-18.

Karina Figueroa was the only 49er in double figures, scoring 16 points in the loss.
