CSULB student gets a shot at stardom

Far different from his job at George's Greek Café, Jonny Jergenson, representing Cal State Long Beach, is still in the running to be winner of the KTLA College Anchor Challenge.

“The Audition” has hit The Beach and one Cal State Long Beach student is still in the running for the $25,000 prize.

The playing field has been narrowed down to eight contestants. Sixteen were originally chosen from hundreds of college student candidates who aspired to be on-air for the KTLA College Anchor Challenge.

Although in this round, the reward is not an on-air spot. It is a cash payout for the winner.

Of the 16 who were chosen, coming from colleges like USC, UCLA, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach City College, UC Riverside and others, three were from CSULB. After the first week of voting, two were eliminated. CSULB still has one candidate left: Jonny Jergenson.

He’s not a journalism major, nor has he ever set foot in front of a green screen or teleprompter, but Jergenson made the first week’s cut.

When asked what people think about seeing him on the morning news, Jergenson said, “my family and friends are giving me advice. This week was a little harder than the first because we were live and people were a lot more serious,” Jergenson said.

This week people can go online to KTLA and vote for their favorite contestant. The field will then be narrowed down to four. If Jergenson wins, he plans to pay off student loans, put some money aside for a down payment on a house and take everyone who voted for him out for a drink.

Jergenson said he has enjoyed this experience and representing CSULB. Though he may not see himself with a future in broadcast news, Jergenson may consider changing his career choice from salesman to something behind the camera.
