The No. 20 Long Beach State women’s soccer team recovered from a 2-1 overtime loss at UC Davis Friday to beat UC Irvine 3-0 at George Allen Field Sunday afternoon.
Kristen Childress opened the scoring in the first half, and Hayley Bolt found the net twice in the final 45 minutes to give LBSU (13-3-1, 4-0-1) its all-time record 13th win of the season Sunday.
The win, combined with a UC Santa Barbara tie Sunday, put the 49ers in a tie for first place in the Big West with 13 points. But the 49ers have a game in-hand on the Gauchos.
“Getting that first goal was big for us,” said LBSU head coach Mauricio Ingrassia. “It raised our energy level and then Hayley had a beautiful goal to put the game away.”
Childress scored off a Kim Silos free kick that smacked the crossbar and then bounced once before Childress headed the ball into the goal. It was Childress’ second goal of the season and her first since Sept. 10.
“Before the game I talked with [Childress] about how maybe the season isn’t going the way she wanted, but I told her there is still a lot of the season left,” Ingrassia said. “So what does she do? She goes into the game and scores a goal. It was great.”
Bolt doubled the advantage in the 48th minute on a fantastic goal even for Bolt standards.
The center midfielder received the ball 20 yards from goal and fired a bullet to the upper right-hand corner of the goal, which deflected off the crossbar and down into the net.
Bolt struck again 15 minutes later, this time heading home a Dana Farquhar cross. Bolt is now tied with Silos in goals scored this year with eight.
“That cross from Dana was perfect,” Bolt said. “I’m playing good right now, but I give a lot of credit to my teammates. They have been playing spectacular.”
On Friday, UC Davis (8-4-1) upset the 49ers when Britnee Warmerdam scored in the 97th minute to give the Aggies the victory in overtime.
