49ers’ three-game winning streak ends with 1-0 loss to Georgia

The Long Beach State women’s soccer team started its two-game road trip with a 1-0 loss to Georgia on Friday, putting an end to its short three-game winning streak.

The 49ers (3-3-0) were held to only four shots by the Bulldogs (6-1-0) in a game that remained scoreless until Georgia forward Marion Crowder fired the game’s only goal in the 80th minute at the Turner Soccer Complex.

With the win, the Bulldogs extended their winning streak to six games, all of which have been shutouts.

While the ‘Niners saw their winning streak end, their streak of being held scoreless in the first half continued. LBSU hasn’t scored a goal in the first half in any of its six games this season.

Goalkeeper Kaci McCain had a season-high five saves to back defender Taylor Nelson’s strong defensive outing. Nelson cleared a ball out from the goal line in the 66th minute before blocking a shot from point-blank range 15 minutes later.

LBSU came close to changing the game with a goal in the final minute of regulation—something they did in their last road game against Texas Tech two weeks ago.

After a corner kick by freshman Mimi Rangel, Nelson lofted a shot from 18 yards out in the 89th minute that missed the top post by mere inches.

The Beach will head to Alabama to face Auburn on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game before returning home for a two-game homestand starting next Saturday
