Sophomore guides Team USA to fourth place at FIVB Championships

Long Beach State middle blocker Haleigh Hampton helped the USA Women’s Junior National Team to a fourth place finish at the 2011 World Volleyball Championships held in Lima, Peru.

Team USA advanced out of pool play to the third-place match in the 16-team tournament before eventually falling to China in four sets Sunday.

Meanwhile, Italy claimed the gold medal after defeating Brazil in four sets.

In the first round of pool play, the Americans finished in first place, winning all three of their matches to advance to the top of Group E. Team USA then finished in second-place in that pool behind Italy.

Team USA advanced to the medal round with that result, and lost in a five-set thriller to Brazil, dropping the final set by a 16-14 score to fall into the third-place game. The Americans then won the final set before falling to China 3-1.

Hampton, who played and started for Team USA through the tournament, finished third on the American squad with 55 kills. She also added 10 blocks and six aces through eight matches.

Hampton now returns to Long Beach, where the sophomore will join fellow 2010 First-Team All-Big West Conference selection Caitlin Ledoux as the 49ers prepare for the 2011 season, where the 49ers will attempt to reach the NCAA Tournament for an 25th consecutive season.
