Women’s Golf: Four golfers earn Big West honors
Four Long Beach State women’s golfers were named to the All-Big West Conference team, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Freshman Simone Hoey was named to the first-team, sophomore Noelle Zavaleta was a second-team selection and junior Lindsey McAtee and sophomore Monica Villarreal were tabbed as honorable mention.
This was the most awards the 49ers have received from the conference since 2006, when five players were selected to all-conference team.
LBSU placed second at the Big West Championships in San Luis Obispo, finishing six strokes ahead of No. 40 UC Irvine. The 49ers had three players finish in the top 10 led by Hoey who finished third with a nine-over, landing just one stroke behind the leaders.
Men’s Volleyball: Bittner tabbed All-American
Senior Dean Bittner was named second-team All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
The honor marks Bittner’s third All-American selection, including first-team recognition as a junior and second-team accolades as a sophomore.
Bittner led the 49ers in kills and kills per game as a senior and finished this season with 502 kills (4.61 per game), 85 blocks (0.78 per game) and 41 service aces (0.38 per game). He earned national player of the week accolades on Jan. 25, his Long Beach State record-tying fourth national player of the week honor.
The opposite finished his career second all-time in kills at LBSU with 1,872, as well as second in total kill attempts (3,931) and most matches with 20+ kills (40), third in most matches with 10+ kills (91), fourth in service aces (130) and sixth in service ace average (.310).
Women’s Volleyball: 49ers add foreign recruit
Kiri Hirini, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, has signed a National Letter of Intent to come to Long Beach State beginning in the 2010 season.
Hirini comes to The Beach from The Lakes in Tauranga, New Zealand. The freshman will also has experience as an outside hitter.
Also a top beach volleyball player, Hirini competed for New Zealand at the U19 FIVB Beach Volleyball tournament. She was also selected for New Zealand’s indoor national team at both the youth and junior levels.
Hirini joins a recruiting class that includes four other incoming freshmen for the 2010 season, along with returning All-Big West honorees Caitlin Ledoux and Ashley Lee.
Women’s Water Polo: Sieprath, Cerda earn conference honors
Junior Lauren Sieprath and sophomore Krizia Cerda were both named All-Big West second-team selections, as both earned the honor for the second time.
Cerda led Long Beach State with 50 goals as a sophomore, tallying 76 over two years at The Beach. She came on late for LBSU, scoring 13 goals over the last four games of the year, including five in the Big West tournament.
Sieprath, with 37 goals on the year, ranked second on the team in scoring and is seventh in career goals scored at The Beach with 117 over three years.
