Former 49er found shot, killed in Irvine

Monica Quan

Former Long Beach State basketball player Monica Quan, 28, and her fiancé Keith Lawrence, 27, were found dead in a parked car in a parking structure in Irvine Sunday night, according to the Irvine Police Department.

Quan played basketball for LBSU from 2003 to 2005 before transferring to Concordia College in Irvine, according to LBSU Assistant Media Relations Director Andrea Ohta. Before her death, Quan was serving as an assistant coach to the women’s basketball team at Cal State Fullerton.

The deaths of Quan and Lawrence are being investigated as a double homicide. Both Quan and Lawrence were found shot, according to the Irvine Police Department.

Fullerton hosted a news conference Monday with CSUF athletic director Jim Donovan and CSUF women’s basketball head coach Marcia Foster.

“We were very shocked and saddened to learn what’s happened to Monica [Quan],” Donovan said. “She was a second-year coach for us and a very special person.”

Foster also had kind words to say about Quan.

“A really bright light was put out way to soon,” she said. “She was someone I counted on to tell the truth. I loved that about her.”

Quan played 43 career games for the 49ers, making her first start against Belmont College in her freshman year. She finished the game with a career-high 14 points and 5 assists.

Before playing for LBSU, Quan earned second team All-CIF honors while playing at Walnut High School. During her time at Walnut, she set the school record for most 3-pointers made in a single season with 59. She was also a first team All-Baseline League selection and was named to the Los Angeles Times All-Region Team.

Quan served as an assistant coach for Cal Lutheran University from 2008 to 2010 before accepting her job at Fullerton before the 2010-11 season.
