The Cal State University said yesterday it will cope with decreased state funding by cutting student enrollment next year by 10,000.
The CSU plans to apply roughly $140 million in revenue from last year’s tuition increases to a governor-proposed budget cut, but it still faces a shortfall.
The cuts in enrollment will save the university some $60 million, mediating a $500 million budget gap. The 18 percent cut to the CSU’s budget is also accompanied by a mandatory $50 million budget reduction, forcing the CSU to cut costs by $550 million in total.
CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed said that campus presidents would decide cuts at each campus.
“They will have to make some very difficult decisions in light of the magnitude of this reduction in state support,” he said in statement.
President F. King Alexander said CSULB is considering at least seven different budget scenarios, each of which has “enrollment implications.”
The university said it would also cut some $250 million in employment costs. Since the 2008-09 academic year, the university has reduced the number of its employees by 8.9 percent, or 4,145.
But the CSU could be faced with an even steeper budget gap.
“If the voters do not get the opportunity to vote in June to extend three expiring taxes or choose to not extend them, we will face a potential 35 percent state cut,” said Alexander in a statement.
Without the extension of these taxes the CSU says it could face a $1 billion reduction in its state budget.
According to the CSU, the Legislative Analyst’s Office recommends a student enrollment cut of 20,000, a 10 percent tuition fee increase and a 5 percent decrease in faculty and staff compensation if the university is faced with such a cut.
