In Season 9: Episode 5 of Beach Weekly, we are rolling through a series of major headlines affecting Long Beach State students both on and off campus.
In an email sent out last Monday, Long Beach State President Jane Close Conoley announced that the university has officially lifted its in-class mask requirement. Masks are now strongly recommended in indoor campus settings, but will not be enforced. Beach community members are asked to continue self-monitoring for COVID-19 related symptoms, and to respect the choice of students and staff members who continue to wear facial coverings.
President Conoley received a 28% salary raise from the California State University Board of Trustees. Her raise starkly contrasts hat of faculty members, who received a 3% this year. Long Beach State faculty members and students are expressing their discontent with President Conoley’s raise, and are raising questions about the allocation of university funds. We spoke to the Daily Forty-Niner’s News Assistant, Vincent Medina, for more on the story.
With abortion care still protected under state law in California, Long Beach State’s Student Health Services provides an array of free reproductive health and family planning resources to students. For more information on the reproductive and sexual health care available on campus, students can visit the Student Health Services website.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Rachel Fattal has joined Long Beach State as a coach for the Women’s Water Polo team. Fattal, a Seal Beach native and Los Alamitos High School alum, won a World Championship in 2015 and gold medals at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. In addition to her new coaching position, Fattal will continue to play for the US Women’s National Water Polo Team.
Long Beach was named a 2022 Digital Inclusion Trailblazer by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance for bringing digital access to minority groups lacking internet. Long Beach received the achievement because of its Digital Inclusion Initiative, which seeks to address the digital divide facing groups less likely to have wireless internet access in the city.
While gas prices are falling nationally, they are on the rise again in California. State officials are putting the blame for the high prices on oil companies, though production problems at refineries, high industry regulations, and California’s state gas tax are all contributing factors. Some California residents will begin to receive inflation relief payments in the coming weeks as a part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s $11 billion inflation relief package. To quality for a relief payment, residents must have filed income tax in California and earn less than $500,000 a year.
Hispanic Heritage Month began on Sept. 15, and you can participate in an array of festivities right here in Long Beach. The Long Beach Public Library system is hosting a series of events through Nov. 2, the Museum of Latin American Art is hosting numerous in-person events, and the Aquarium of the Pacific will host its 21st annual Baja Splash Cultural Festival on Sept. 24-25.
The last two remaining candidates for Long Beach mayor, Rex Richardson and Suzie Price, are scheduled to participate in a forum in the USU Beach Auditorium this Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 5:30pm on the Long Beach State campus. The one-hour forum, hosted by ASI and the Long Beach League of Women Voters, is free to enter and open to all members of the public.
