Zombies will invade the lawn of Los Alamitos Thursday night starting at 5 p.m. for the Apocapalooza event.
The event will feature activites and several zombie themed games, such at a “Zombie vs. Human” themed capture-the-flag game, which will begin at 6 p.m. Attendees will also be able to enjoy a horror movie screening at 8 p.m.
Various campus groups such as the University Art Museum (UAM), the Carpenter Center, Japanese Gardens and the Long Beach Cinematheque, will set up booths at the event. Red Bull representatives will also be playing music and handing out free drinks to attendees.
Chayson Childress, a resident assistant at Los Alamitos and Apocapalooza coordinator, said there will be free food for residents and that the event is free and open to all.
“I cannot wait to see how this bad boy turns out,” Childress said. “It is very neat to see weeks of planning and ‘dreaming up’ ideas turn into an actual happening.”
Childress said he came up with the idea for this event while working at the UAM. When he first heard that there would be a horror movie screening out on the Los Alamitos lawn, he said it sparked the idea to extend the screening into a full on zombie themed festival.
“I had first thought of doing this event before I was hired as an RA,” said Childress. “After being hired, I knew that this was the event that I wanted to do.”
Students can show up to the event in their zombie costumes or they can just go as humans. For those who change their mind, the event will also host face painting.
“Students should definitely dress up,” Childress said. “There will be a photo booth, and the pictures will be uploaded to the housing Facebook page, so that they can show off their zombie swag.”
Students, however, said they have mixed thoughts about the event.
Junior film and electronic arts major Manouk Kraijenbosch said she is looking forward to the Apocapalooza event.
“I didn’t have an opinion about zombies until I saw the movie ‘Warm Bodies,’” Kraijenbosch said. “After the movie, I thought ‘I want to meet a zombie …’ If that zombie decides to chase me, then I would run away and scream so loud.”
Freshman nursing major Grace Chang, on the other hand, said, “I don’t really like the idea of zombie events because it’s getting really old and overused.”
