Reggae festival to groove in Long Beach

Summer may be over, but there’s still time to soak up the California sun while listening to some good music. On Saturday, Sept. 3, the Shoreline Jam music festival at the Queen Mary will feature Reggae artists such as Pepper, Soja, Iration and Tomorrow’s Bad Seeds, as well as Huntington Beach ska band Suburban Legends.

After the successful X Fest in Modesto, John Sullivan and his team, The Producing Group, decided they wanted to put together another festival.

With a huge Reggae following, as well as the home of Sublime, Long Beach is an ideal venue for the event.

“We feel that waterfront is just a beautiful location for an outdoor festival,” Sullivan said. “We were happy when the Queen Mary asked us to do one this year.”

Adam Taylor, bassist for Iration, said that he anticipated the show because Long Beach was the home of the band’s first performance.

“When we started in Santa Barbara, we just played house parties,” Taylor said. “We were friends with Pepper and their manager offered us the opening slot back in 2006 or 2007 at a concert they had on the Queen Mary. This was the first big out of town gig we had, so when we heard that we could come back and play on one of the main stages, we were really excited about that.”

Iration, originally from Hawaii, are known for their vivacious live performances.

“We try and make sure our set list has a good flow to it, with an introduction and conclusion,” Taylor said. “The whole performance is really thought out. It’s a really good time.”

The Shoreline Jam will serve as Iration’s final show before embarking on their nationwide fall Lei’d Back Tour, which begins in Oregon and ends in Hawaii, where they will play with Sublime with Rome. The group will also premiere two new songs at the show.

A bit different than the other Reggae bands playing, Suburban Legends will bring ska to the festival, playing first on the Headliner Stage.

“People who like Reggae also like ska,” said Aaron Bertram, Suburban Legends’ trumpet player. “It’s like a cousin of Reggae. If people haven’t seen us, hopefully they’re going to be excited about it once we get going. It usually takes a couple songs before people start feeling what we actually do.”

Suburban Legends incorporates choreography in their live performances, including stage combat and disco dance moves, making their shows extra unique.

On July 11, Vince Walker, Suburban Legends’ vocalist,

injured his leg after trying to jump a gate in anticipation for the band’s show at the Anaheim House of Blues. The singer collapsed on stage mid-song, and Bertam asked for the curtains to be closed. Walker returned on stage minutes later with a knee brace and sitting on a stool, unable to perform any of the band’s signature choreography. Since then, doctors have confirmed that Walker has a torn ACL, but Bertram said that won’t stop the group from performing a lively show.

“[Vince] has really been working out his leg,” Bertram said. “He did tear his ACL, so he has an injury that he will probably have to have surgery on. But he’s been working it out and strengthening it, so you wouldn’t even notice that he has a problem. He will be able to do 90 percent of the choreography with us.”

Besides music, the Shoreline Jam will also include food, such as barbecue and hamburgers, as well as beer and wine. Vendors will also sell beach-related products.
