Creeping Among the Crypts: Forest Lawn Memorial Park

Spanish architecture, a cathedral and one of the largest pendulums in the country adorn the Forest Lawn Memorial Park of Long Beach.

For those looking for a cemetery sure to give them goosebumps, Forest Lawn Memorial Park of Long Beach has one spooky feature — the front gate of the cemetery, located toward the front of the chapel. Visitors will see crypts lining the walls as they walk through the hallway.

On the first left, the granite tile holds a natural pattern that looks like Satan with horns and his arms risen up. The most interesting part is that the picture in the tile was accidental.

Upon entering the cemetery, the Spanish renaissance architecture stands out. All of the gates leading into the cemetery feature this architecture, as well as the cathedral tower. The cathedral stands erect at the intersection of San Antonio Drive and Cherry Avenue.

Forest Lawn has a number of significant historical aspects. The lawn has existed since 1921 but wasn’t purchased by the cemetery until 1978.

It also features a 1925 cathedral tower and a Spanish Colonial memorial chapel with handcrafted wooden doors, dark wood throughout the chapel and stained glass windows. The vintage windows resemble a storybook, depicting California’s history from 1769 to 1909.

The Foucault pendulum, a part of the Sunnyside Mausoleum, is one of the largest pendulums in the country. It makes one revolution every 42 hours and 48 minutes.

Raphael, a famous Italian painter, created the fresco “Disputation of the Holy Sacrament,” which sits The Vatican. The cemetery recreated the fresco in 1981 and titled it “Paradise.” The fresco stands 32-feet-tall and 45-feet-wide.

Forest Lawn also has locations in Hollywood Hills, Cathedral City, Covina, Cypress and Glendale. The Glendale and Hollywood Hills sites both have mountains of celebrity gravesites including Walt Disney, Michael Jackson and John Ritter.

The Forest Lawn Memorial Park of Long Beach is located at 1500 E. San Antonio Dr.
