Baseball: Dirtbags tally 19 hits in series-opening win
Long Beach State roughed up Cal Poly pitchers for 19 hits on its way to a 12-8 win on Friday night at Baggett Stadium.
Senior first baseman Steve Tinoco led the power surge with four RBIs on 3-for-5 hitting. Tinoco picked up his first home run of the season with a three-run shot in the fifth inning.
Kellen Hoime and Devin Lohman also collected three hits apiece for LBSU.
Beach starting pitcher Andrew Gagnon (5-4) struck out seven batters in seven innings of work and allowed one earned run. The Dirtbags’ bullpen allowed four runs in the ninth inning before Kenny Arnerich came in to close out the opener.
The Dirtbags (20-18, 7-6 Big West Conference), now winners of five of their last six games, return to Baggett Stadium on Saturday at 6 p.m. as LBSU’s Jake Thompson is scheduled to face D.J. Mauldin of Cal Poly.
Women’s Tennis: 49ers cruise into Big West semifinals
The No. 1-seeded 49ers swept No. 8 Cal State Fullerton, 4-0, in the Big West tournament first round on Friday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Anais Dallara, Rachel Manasse and Sarah Cantlay each picked up singles victories for the 49ers to secure the four points necessary to clinch the match, according to the Big West tournament format.
Dallara sealed the match for LBSU with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Monica Rodriguez at No. 2 singles. Manasse soundly defeated Jaycee Cruz 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 and Cantlay blanked Lani Agsalud 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
The 49ers had already secured the doubles point going into singles play as Dallara and Deborah Armstrong defeated Cruz and Malorie dela Cruz, 8-2, at No. 2, while Cantlay and Julie Luzar moved past Karina Akhmedova and Erin Wiesner, 8-1, at the No. 3 spot.
The Beach (18-5) will face No. 4-seeded Cal Poly in the semifinals on Saturday at 9 a.m.
