L.A. artist lectures her humorous art at the Beach

Performance-based artist Andrea Fraser will visit Cal State Long Beach Wednesday, Feb. 24 to lecture for the art department’s guest lecture series.

Fraser’s body of work is primarily composed of installations and performances that address issues of politics, critiques of the commerce of art and the hierarchal structure of the art world—including the modern-day art museum. Though Fraser addresses serious issues, she is known for incorporating humor and satire in her performances.

In Fraser’s “Untitled” (2003), an American art collector paid close to $20,000 to participate in a sexual encounter with Fraser. Using her body as a medium, she met the unidentified collector in a New York hotel, and created a 60 minute piece that was shown at the Friedrich Petzel Gallery in New York.

Fraser described her intentions as an artist in a New York Times article, ”All of my work is about what we want from art, what collectors want, what artists want from collectors, what museum audiences want.”

Once a New York based artist, Fraser is now a Professor of New Genres at the University California Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. She was a founding member of the feminist performance group, the V-Girls, from 1986 to 1996; the project-based artist initiative Parasite from 1997 to 1998; and the cooperative art gallery Orchard from 2005 to the present.

Fraser’s lecture is Wednesday in the University Theater (UT-108) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
