Briefs from Tuesday’s Southland fires reports

As fires continued to rage throughout Southern California Tuesday, several people, including the presidents of the United States and Cal State Long Beach, sent out reports on the status of and damage caused by the blazes.

CSULB president issues statement4:18 p.m.CSULB President F. King Alexander issued a statement via mass e-mail concerning how the fire is affecting students, faculty and staff. “My greatest concern is the safety and well-being of all the members of our campus community and their families.”

CSULB offers aid4:11 p.m.Cal State Long Beach has offered assistance to affected CSU campuses for “assistance and mutual aid as necessary,” according to Toni Beron, a university spokeswoman.

CSULB has offered assistance to the campuses of Cal State San Marcos, San Diego State and Cal State San Bernardino.

Cal State San Marcos, San Diego State, San Bernardino, UC San Diego and the University of San Diego are reported to have closed their campuses through the end of the week.

Governor in Lake Arrowhead3:49 p.m.Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is in Lake Arrowhead viewing the region’s damage. Fire officials say only 30 percent of the fire there is contained.

President coming to SoCal3:34 p.m.President Bush is visiting Southern California on Thursday “to view the wildfires and monitor federal firefighting and recovery efforts,” reported the Los Angeles Times.

A White House spokesman said Bush”wanted to make sure that the state and local governments were receiving the support they needed from Washington,” reported the Times.

President Bush declares state of emergency11:57 a.m.Federal aid was ordered by the president to the state of California. The affected counties are Los Angeles, San Diego, Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino, Riverside and Santa Barbara.
