LBSU women’s basketball drops two more

It has now officially become a historically bad season for the Long Beach State women’s basketball season.

With its 69-55 loss to visiting UC Santa Barbara Saturday night, LBSU (5-20, 2-8) lost its 20th game of the season, more than any other in the program’s history.

UCSB (14-10, 7-2) went on a 15-0 run in the middle of the second half to take a commanding 40-20 going into the half.

Karina Figueroa led LBSU in the loss, scoring 15 points.

Against Cal Poly on Thursday night, LBSU was able hold the Mustangs leading scorer Jessica Eggleston, who scored eight points on 3-16 shooting, but the 49ers could not overcome 26 turnovers and fell to the Mustangs, 67-56, at The Walter Pyramid.

The 49ers started the game with an 8-0 run and led the entire first half, but allowed Cal Poly (9-12, 4-4) to contend with continuous turnovers. The Mustangs took their first lead at 41-39 midway into the second half and led the rest of the way.

Karina Figueroa struggled to find her usual groove throughout most of the game, often being double-teamed by the Mustang defense. However, she came on strong during the final five minutes of the game, scoring 10 points in that span. She led the team with 17 points. Madison Pagani followed with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Cal Poly’s Toni Newman, averaging 8.6 points before the game, led the team with 16 points and eight steals. Megan Harrison followed with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The 49ers shot 35 percent compared to the Mustangs 37 percent. However, the deciding factors were Cal Poly’s 18 steals and 48 percent shooting in the second half.
