Senior lifts LBSU to decisive victory in opener

Senior Aleksandar Petrovic led the Long Beach State men’s water polo team to a season-opening 16-5 drubbing of Fresno Pacific University on Saturday in the UCI Invitational at Anteater Pool.

The starters for the 49ers (1-0) scored 13 of the 16 goals, with Petrovic posting a game-high of four. Nathan McConell added three; Brian Schiefer, Milos Vrzic and Barry Snyder chipped in two goals apiece.

Matthew Kubeck finished with seven saves for the 49ers, while Sinan Karatay added four in the second half.

The 49ers broke open a 3-3 game late in the second quarter as they scored four unanswered goals in a four minute stretch to take a 7-3 lead into the half. The four-goal run sparked a 13-1 run the rest of the way with LBSU outscoring FPU, 9-1, in the second half.

Long Beach (1-0) will return to action to face Redlands at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday.
