Beach tennis falls short in Malibu

The No. 44-ranked Long Beach State women’s tennis team opened up its four-match road stretch with a tough loss to No. 37 Pepperdine, 4-3, in Malibu on Friday.

Despite taking all three points from the top of their lineup, LBSU’s bottom four could not hold off the Waves in singles action.

The 49ers found themselves in an early hole in singles play as Sarah Cantlay lost to Andrea Oates, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.

Meanwhile, The Beach didn’t fare any better at No. 5 as Rachel Manasse fell to Khunpak Issara, 6-0, 6-3.

The ‘Niners dropped a third match at the No. 3 slot as Deborah Armstrong was quickly ousted by Anamika Bhargava, 6-3, 6-2.

The 49ers pulled back into contention as Klaudia Malenovska posted her fourth consecutive victory since returning from suspension as she outlasted Ale Granillo, 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 action.

Meanwhile, at the No.1 spot, Anais Dallara came from behind to hold off Arianna Colffer, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

However, a 7-6, 6-3 loss by Jaklin Alawi to Marie Zalameda in No. 4 action clinched the victory for the Waves.

The 49ers got off to a quick start, though, taking two of three doubles matches to earn the first point.

Alawi and Rachel Manasse recorded the first win of the match as they outlasted Bhargava and Granillo, 8-4, at the No. 2.

Anais Dallara and Klaudia Malenovska clinched the point with an 8-6 edge over Issara and Zalameda.

The 49ers dropped the third doubles match at No. 3 as Cantlay and Julie Luzar fell to Colffer and Oates, 8-6.

LBSU won’t return to action until Thursday, March 31 to face Illinois-Chicago for a 10:30 a.m. Match.
