‘Niners roll through LMU

The No. 42-ranked Long Beach State women’s tennis team posted its second consecutive victory with a 6-1 nonconference road win over Loyola Marymount on Saturday.

The 49ers (2-1) picked up the doubles points with a pair of victories in the best-of-three format. LBSU’s No. 1 duo of Anais Dallara and Deborah Armstrong defeated LMU’s Elisaveta Pironkova and Reka Rohovni, 8-1. In No. 3 doubles play, Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar cruised to an 8-3 decision over April Bisharat and Shauna Morgan.

The Lions (0-4) picked up their lone doubles victory at No. 2, where Ashley Anderson and Miya Jin defeated Jaklin Alawi and Anna Jeczmionka, 8-2.

Jin was also responsible for LMU’s only singles victory as she outlasted Jeczmionka in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 10-1. In another three-set singles match, Dallara defeated Bisharat, 5-7, 6-4, 10-2, at No. 1.

Cantlay remained undefeated for The Beach in No. 5 action with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Anderson. Meanwhile, Alawi lost just three games all weekend in singles play and took care of Pironkova, 6-0, 6-1, on the No. 2 court.

Armstrong and Rachel Manasse rounded out the singles victories for LBSU. Armstrong defeated Morgan, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 3 play, and Manasse closed out Rohovni, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6.

The 49ers will make their home debut Thursday with a 2 p.m. showdown against Hawaii at the Rhodes Tennis Center. It will be the first of three consecutive home matches for The Beach.
