Men’s hoops to host Weber State for Homecoming

After dropping close contests at national powers Brigham Young and Wisconsin last weekend, the 49er men’s basketball team has Homecoming back at The Beach.

The Weber State Wildcats visit the Walter Pyramid in the home opener Saturday at 4:05 p.m.

LBSU (0-2), which has averaged 63 points per game and shot .442 percent from the field, has showcased a balanced attack led by senior guard Donovan Morris (12.5 PPG). Stephan Gilling is scoring 9.0 PPG and Cornel Williams is netting 8.5 PPG and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Weber State (1-1) opened the young season in the Los Angeles Regional of the 2K Sports Classic. The Wildcats lost to Miami (OH), 70-66, and then beat Prairie View A&M, 78-68.

The Wildcats are paced by four players averaging double digits in points including guard Kellen McCoy (14.0 PPG and 4.0 RPG), forward Kyle Bullinger (13.5 PPG), guard/forward Nick Hansen (12.0 PPG) and guard Daviin Davis (10.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG and 4.5 assists per game).

In a non-conference home-and-away rarity, both teams will also meet Dec. 11 in Ogden, Utah.

The game will be preceded with festivities for former LBSU head coach Jerry Tarkanian. He coached the 49ers from 1968-73, posted a 122-20 record and never lost a home game.

In 43 years of coaching, “Tark” won 990 games and his teams went to the NCAA tournament 17 times, including in 1970 at LBSU.

As a part of Homecoming festivities, a “We Bleed Black and Gold” pep rally is scheduled at the Walter Pyramid tonight at 7:30 p.m.

  1. 73-69 overtime win to open the home campaign…not bad. Now the wins will need to keep coming, to build some confidence this early in the season.
