Blotter: University Police arrest alleged bicycle thief

University Police arrested a man after an on-foot pursuit at 9:12 p.m. Tuesday near Whaley Park. The man allegedly stole a bicycle from campus, according to a University Police press release.

University Police received a report of a stolen bicycle around 9 p.m. The bike had been parked and secured to bicycle racks west of the University Police Station.

Officers then found Anthony Webster, a non-student, riding a bicycle that matched a description of the stolen one, University Police Lt. Richard Goodwin said.

University Police followed Webster onto Atherton Street, where officers attempted to detain him, Goodwin said. Webster then dumped the bike on the southwest corner of Whaley Park and jumped into the flood control canal, he said.

Officers chased Webster on foot, apprehended him in the canal and arrested him for evading police and allegedly stealing a bicycle, Goodwin said.

Goodwin said the theft is still under investigation and that hopefully the case will clear up more investigations regarding other bicycle thefts. Webster faces felony charges, he said.

Student arrested for series of burglaries

A student carrying a stolen bicycle wheel on campus was arrested on suspicion of stealing a bike at 9:44 p.m. on Feb. 4, according to a University Police press release.

According to the press release, University Police detained Brandon Karlsson at a Seventh Street bus stop west of campus. He was then transported to Long Beach City jail.

Karlsson admitted to taking the wheel from a parked and secured bicycle at the racks near the University Police station, according to the press release.

After further investigation, Karlsson was found to have additional items related to burglary reports from earlier that night, according to the release.

The items, a purse and cell phone, were reported stolen from the Parkside College dining hall at 7:17 p.m. Six minutes later, a backpack was stolen from that Hillside College dining hall that contained a textbook, money, headphones, a calculator and keys, according to the press release.

All items were taken from unsecured cubbies in the Parkside and Hillside dining halls.

Goodwin said Karlsson was charged with two counts of felony burglary, a misdemeanor theft and possession of drugs with intent to sell.

Goodwin said the CSULB Office of Judicial Affairs, which investigates charges against students who violate campus rules and regulations, will determine Karlsson’s consequences with the university. The investigation is ongoing, Goodwin said.

Four Mac computers stolen from University Library

Four Mac computers were reported stolen Tuesday at 4 p.m. from the University Library, Goodwin said.

Police say there are no suspects, and it is still under investigation. The computers were stolen sometime between midnight and 6:30 a.m.
